Email Marketing Goal

Their goal of this project was first and foremost to let customers know that we are still here and better than ever. We have updated our database making it easier to use and more secure. The Email was intended to go to only military members who canceled and never bought a computer. We were not sure which Email style would work best so we decided to send it out in batches and monitor the progress. We were unhappy with the copy – I mean modified picture – of the “professional” Email Jerry Hart created, so we used one by our staff and another one from a web copy writer in the experiment. This meant 3 different styles of Emails went out to different groups of canceled orders by order date. We worked out the dates so there were an equal number of recipients from each order time period. In addition, the Email batches also created a buffer, so we were not swamped with calls since we were inviting customers to call – over 14,000 military customers would receive this offer.

Jerry Hart Problems

Problems occurred from the very beginning. Rich was egger to assist in the project to make sure it was as successful as possible. We know our customers very well, so this accompanied with a Email marketing “professional” seemed like a flawless plan. Unfortunately, we ended up dedicated much more time and effort than Jerry Hart. Although we are based in Thailand, we offered Jerry a toll-free number for him to call or called him back so he would incur no fees. The meetings were billed for several hundred dollars for his valuable information, which we felt wasn’t so valuable. One example is his “drip drip” method where you concentrate on a small selection of customers who did not respond or open the Email and you send them more until they do answer. Of course each drip would be an additional fee on-top of the more than 3,000 we were billed. The project was going to billed in milestones – but again this was more false promises. We were billed once which we paid promptly and then billed a few days later on our credit card which deviated from the plan. A foreshadow of what was to come…

Jerry Hart’s Email layout had a number of errors:

1. The message was completely wrong and gave a sense that their computer was recently ordered.
2. The customizing data format was not check which affected the Title and Greeting.
3. No tracking code was installed.
4. Our company was misspelled at the bottom.
5. The layout is not professional – no where near worth $650 – and displays incorrectly

Each of these Emails were sent out to an equal number of our customers. First thing that had to be done is import our customer database in to the Email sending program. Jerry Hart uses Listrak – which is a great online marketing software. We bought it through Jerry Hart so the account is in his name and we were billed through him. Unfortunately, can no longer use it – BUT – we could always repurchase an account.

Jerry Hart Failure to Deliver

When it came for the moment of truth of sending out the Emails and monitoring the progress of the batches we encountered more problems. The batch system that we spent creating were not followed and a large mass of Emails were sent out but ONLY of Jerry Hart’s Email. This Email had errors and created numerous complaints. The complaints were understandable and an unnecessary confusion. Since most of the orders that were mentioned occurred over 3 years ago, customers worried that someone was making unauthorized transactions and/or were a victim of identity theft. This is a very serious issue for all citizens of the new digital world.

Furthermore it contained no tracking code that Rich even offered to put in for Jerry Hart. The tracking code is basically an extension that is added at the end of links that are database is able to track to purchases. For what ever reason, this simple addition was left off.

After numerous requests, Rich was given access to the Listrak account so that he could fix the problems in Jerry’s Email, add tracking codes, create the batches for the other layouts, generate copy, and finally send out the other Emails. All of which that Jerry promised to do verbally, but then later was denied as he stated, “It was not listed in the contract and required additional payment.”

Jerry Hart’s Failed Results

Finally, at the end of the ordeal the stats further supported our thoughts of Jerry Hart’s incompetence. A far greater amount of customer unsubscribed from our Email program with the first massive batch that Jerry Hart sent. Also, there were ZERO sales attributed to Jerry Hart’s Email. The number of complaints was far greater with Jerry’s Email. Complaints from the other Email were just statements or questions on why were were contacting them years after their initial request – which is a valid point but it provided a reminder of us and opportunity for them to be removed from our mailing list.

Mike wanted nothing more to do with Jerry Hart, but Rich thought that 800HighTech may be able to salvage some of the money and expenses occurred by receiving the final $650.00 dollar template that was promised and fortunately stated in the contract. We hoped that we would get a frame that we could modify and then end the relationship. Rich had sent countless Emails, layouts, pictures, sales message and etc. to help develop a successful layout.

Jerry Hart’s Final Failure

We would accept no more toll-free calls and wanted nothing except the newsletter that we had already paid for. We would not have to worry about copy or pictures since he proved drastically incompetent in the previous template. 2 more weeks passed and Jerry wrote to admit his mistakes and his desire to “prove himself with results.” A few more days passed and he submitted 2 layouts! This was a big step for Jerry Hart – but of course in the end our hopes were unmet. The 2 “professional” layouts were forwarded Email newsletters from other companies they were dated a few days prior to his recent submissions. We receive hundred of newsletters in our Spam folder from an array of companies. The 2 forwarded newsletters were pretty much unchanged from the original company with a few minor wording changes. If I were going to attempt something as blatant as this, I would have at least forwarded the best newsletter I could find in my Junk mail box. These were horrible and again you can judge for yourself by following the two links listed below:

Our final offer for a peaceful separation was for a refund for as much as possible. I am sure you can imagine how much we were offered. Yup ZERO! Which incidentally is the same number of times that Jerry Hart has contacted us afterwards. Although, by every means this project was a complete failure we always try to remain optimistic and take what we have gained and moved on. We learned that the “professionals” will not be able to help us and that it is best to leave it to ourselves. We know our customers the best and we have a much more invested interest in making sure our customers our pleased. We are in the process of constructing a new Email plan and improve communications with our customers.
On a final note I would like to recommend that if you have considered Jerry Hart or looking to do an Email or any sort of marketing campaign Jerry Hart is not your solution! If you do have a solution we are interested in learning about it. However, we will give you the same introduction we did to Jerry. We are more than fair and we pay based on results. We do not need to hear reasons or excuses. He have pay for services from various individuals, all of which who left benefiting. Most of the times our expectations have not been met and was was promised was not delivered. Jerry Hart had numerous examples in his portfolio and we are interested in hiring who ever created those as they were very convincing. The Internet is filled with various con-artist and false promises – it is very difficult to know what to trust and believe on the Internet and our next project will be billed upon completion.

Bangkok and the North of Thailand

In Bangkok and the North, the cool season sets in around November and last up till February. During these months it’s mostly dry with temperatures ranging between 18 º C to 32 º C, with the Northern areas usually being a little cooler than Bangkok. For many visitors, mid-afternoon in the cool season can still feel swelteringly hot; however in the morning and at nighttime, temperatures can drop to as low as 8 º C – 12 º C and even lower in the north.

Be prepared for both hot and cold temperatures, light clothing in the heat of the day and long sleeves during the evening should keep you feeling comfortable. There may be the very odd occasional downpour so and umbrella or light water resistant jacket may be useful. Don’t forget that the tropical sun can be harsh, even during the cool season hats and sun block is also advised.

The hot season begins after the northeastern monsoon winds stop providing cool air for Bangkok and the North of Thailand. From March till May the temperatures increase, and as the lush vegetation is sucked of all it nutrients, it becomes humid and towards the end of the hot season, very dry. Temperatures can reach up to 40 º C with humidity levels of 75%, the North being slightly hotter than Bangkok

If you are concerned about heat, try to avoid April and May, these months can be extremely hot and humid and considerably uncomfortable even for the locals. If you do happen to be here during April, the Thai’s celebrate their New Year and coming of the rainy season in a nation wide celebration that lasts from April 12th to the 15th. This spectacular festival is literally a nationwide water fight which can be an extremely fun break from the dry and arid heat in the hottest month of the year.

The monsoons start to pour in June and finish around October. July and August are generally the heaviest months, temperatures average approx 29 º C but humidity levels rise to 90%. Downpours may temporarily flood areas of Bangkok and the North; however rain pours rarely last longer than an hour or two.

The Southeast and Southwest

The southern peninsular region of Thailand sees two seasons, the hot and the wet; however they do not occur at the same time on the eastern and the western sides.

The Western Peninsular

On the western side of the peninsular Thailand’s shores stretch along the warm waters of the Andaman Ocean. Many tourist travel here every year to visit such destinations as Krabi, Phuket and Koh Lanta to experience Thailand’s tropical paradise.

Heavy storms begin in the west in April and last until October. Many resorts shut down for this low season and the tourist population decreases. The weather can be unpredictable at best and those caught out on some islands like Koh Phi-Ph (where the famous film “The Beach” was filmed) may get stuck due to rough seas.

As November comes around the holiday makers return and seasons starts again. Although the seasons are split into two, it does get slightly hotter towards the end of the hot season in the south.

Eastern Peninsular

This is the Southern part of the Gulf of Thailand; popular destinations include a set of three beautiful islands (Koh) off the cost of Surrathani and Chumporn, Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan and Koh Tao.

On this side, the monsoon rains begin later in year around September and last until December. Much like the rain in the Bangkok and the North, down pours usually last an hour or two but can occasionally last up 4-5 hours. And like the Southwest, it starts of cool after the rain finishes and gets hotter and the season progresses.

Wheather sightseeing or killing time in Bangkok, taking a cruise along the legendry Chao Phraya River is a perfect way to spend a day or evening. The Chao Phraya River or “The River of King” has been the lifeblood of Thailand. When the capital of Thailand was moved to Bangkok in 1782 (the beginning of the Rattanakosin period), canals where so abundant in Bangkok that it was labeled “Venice of the East” by European travelers. Since then, many of the canal ways have been filled in or are no longer in use, however life around the Chao Phraya still holds the nostalgia of days long passed.

There are few different types of cruise available, cruises held in the day time tend to be geared towards sightseeing and may provide food, whilst cruises during the evening tend to be luxury dinning and entertainment oriented.

Day Trip and Short Cruise

On both sides of the Chao Phraya River, a tourist can see many magnificent temples and architectural buildings including the Grand Palace, Wat Arun(Temple of dawn), Wat Prayunwong, Wat Rakhang Kositaram, the Rama 8 Bridge, the First Presbyterian Church, the Royal Thai Navy Dockyard, the Thai Maritime Navigation Company, the Old Customs and the Royal Boat House.

Other sights you might wish to see if you don’t wish to travel too far, include the Floating Market at Wat Sai along the Klong(canal) Dao Khanong, 35 mins from Wat Sai is the Snake Farm and then also in the same area is Wat Pak Nam which is famous for amulets and is also a popular place to pay respects to Buddha at the weekend.

Dinner Cruise

Perhaps the most popular cruise to take is a luxury dinner cruise. Held in the evening amidst the cool breeze of the evening, there are a host of different cruises to cater you’re needs. Cruise’s range from traditional Thai cuisine to International buffets, sometime with live music or traditional Thai entertainment. You can expect first class service, 5 star foods and a delightful evening on one of many Bangkok River Cruises.

There are many luxury cruises when it comes to dinning, Hotels like JW Marriot and the Oriental offer International Buffets at a very reasonable price, other cruises like the Loy Nava Cruise and Manorah Cruise offer Traditional Thai Cuisine at around the same price. Cruises take place on wide variety of different boats, some are modern cruise boats with air conditioning and indoor or open air dinning, others may be traditional rice barges and may also have indoor or open air dinning areas. One drink is usually included with the price so be prepared to spend a little more for drinks.

Overnight or 2-4 Day Cruise

If you travel further north you can reach the famous ancient Siamese capital city of Ayutthaya. A river cruise to Ayutthaya can be done in one day; there are options to shorten the cruise by traveling one way on the bus, and cruising back to Bangkok. One or two night cruises offer cabins on board with all amenities.

You can even take 3-4 day river cruise across to Kanchanaburi and visit the Death Railway and the “Bridge over the River Kwai”. During this 3-4 day cruise you will be taken to many untouched places in Thailand such as Khao Noi Cave Temple, Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park also known as “Stone Garden”, Krasae Cave, Kaeng Lava Cave. You will also get the opportunity to visit other parts of the Death railway like Hell Fire Pass and the Thailand-Burma Railway Center Museum.

The festival takes a bazaar turn in series of events that take place during the 9 days. Ceremonies are held to invoke the gods that will protect them from harm and bless them with good health and these ceremonies can get extremely gruesome. In a series of processions and displays, the participants show how they are possessed by the gods who have come to protect them.

These ceremonies include a large procession in which participants walk in a trance stopping at stalls and temples to pay respects. In a separate procession, the participants will use an array of household items to skewer and pierce themselves marching from temple to temple displaying their weird and wonderful acts of self mutilation. Other events which are held inside the temples include running across a hot bed of coals or climbing an 8 meter high ladder of sharp blades whilst in trance.

Whilst this may seem irrelevant to being a vegetarian, it is all part of the colorful 9 day celebrations. Only a small percent of the community take part in the gruesome series events but the strict ‘no meat’ rule is usually adhered to by all. The festival takes place in the southern region of Thailand and this year will run from the 11th of October till the 19th.

Benefits Of Being A Vegetarian

Studies have shown that vegetarians live, on average about 7 years longer, and vegans about 15 years longer than meat eaters. The largest study on diet and health, the Chinese Health Project found that those who eat the least amount of fat and animal products have the lowest risks of heart disease and cancer. American Express is expanding in Taiwan through a tie-up with the island’s EVA Airways as foreign interest in Asia’s fourth-biggest banking market heats up.

American Express will issue a co-branded credit card on Monday with EVA, the island’s No. 2 carrier, after the U.S. company halted issuing new cards for several months last year due to mounting defaults.

Taiwan’s financial sector has become a target for major foreign banks such as Standard Chartered and private equity funds like Carlyle Group [CYL.UL] seeking acquisitions at lower multiples than elsewhere in Asia as Taiwan lenders return to profit.

Taiwan’s domestic banks had a combined pretax profit of T$47.63 billion (US$1.47 billion) from January to July, swinging from T$7.4 billion in losses for the full year of 2006, latest government data showed.

Standard Chartered recently completed its US$1.2 billion merger of a Taiwan lender, while Citigroup  finished its US$436 million merger of another bank.
